Hello and welcome! My name is Sonja Deklerk and I would like to thank you for visiting my shop. Let me begin by telling you a little bit about myself.
I was born and raised in Edmonton, AB Canada (I'm a girl of the Alberta Prairies through and through!) I studied Fine Arts at Grant MacEwan University and began working at Adamas Goldsmiths in the spring of 2001 where I specialized in sales and custom jewellery design. It was during my time at Grant MacEwan that I met the love of my life. Happily married, we have three amazing children who are my pride and joy...my life's masterpiece. It is important for me to let you know that I'm not a morning person, I love the colour pink and I love to sing and dance to anything that is girlie and 80's. We currently live on an acreage with Frank (our Maltese), Strawberry (our Cat) and 11 chickens...
With that little bit of an introduction, I would LOVE to tell you about my jewellery line "More Than Gold." My jewellery is filled with meaning and purpose, and is meant to be worn as a token or reminder of our own great worth and value...truly, you are worth more than gold.
There was a time in my life that I didn't always recognize my own worth and value. Shortly after the birth of my first child, I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. For many years I struggled with depression and anxiety...in 2016, it very nearly cost me my life.
Words cannot adequately describe to you the pain and agony that I have experienced in my darkest hours. My suffering was so great that in desperation, I attempted to end that pain by overdosing on a lethal combination of medications. I very nearly succeeded.
The path to recovery after attempting to take your own life is long and difficult, and could not have been done without out the strength and support of family and friends, proper medical treatment and firm faith in God.
In the moments where darkness and anxiety engulfed me, I found myself focusing on my wedding rings and holding them tight as I thought of my husband and children. This served as a successful way to divert my attention from fear and anxiety toward the love, strength and comfort of my family. That, in combination with medication and therapy helped to get me to a point of healing and wellness. However, what empowered me was the realization that at any given moment, in my sphere of influence, there are other individuals who are experiencing pain similar to mine if not worse.
Love and empathy has given me the strength and courage to step out of my comfort zone in the hope of providing help and comfort to all that I can. You never truly know what another individual is experiencing. Some of us hide it very well. The solution to this, is to treat everyone with love and compassion. Frequently, I think of a line from my favourite hymn that wisely states: "In the quiet heart is hidden, sorrow that the eye can't see."
To you who is reading this, I want you to know that my heart breaks for you if you are struggling in any way. I want you to know that you are of worth and value...you do not have to prove your worth...you do not have to earn your worth...that worth and value is always there simply because you are you.
Because I found focusing on my rings to be such a successful help and support to me, I wanted to create a line of jewellery that was meant to help others in the same way. I lovingly handcraft each piece out of sustainably sourced solid 10KT or 14KT gold. It is my greatest hope that my jewellery will be of help to you in some small way, and that you will find joy and beauty as it is worn. It is my most sincere desire that as you experience life in all of its joys and sorrows, that wearing and reflecting upon my jewellery will serve as an undeniable reminder to you of your own great worth and value...I promise you that your worth is ALWAYS there, whether you feel it in the moment or not. YOU are worth more than gold!
A portion of every sale is donated directly to the YWCA of Edmonton, an organization that advances the wellness and growth of women, girls and families and is very close to my heart.
Thank you for taking the time to read this!
With all of my love,
